Are Players Getting Injured Because of How They’re Training to Move?

Athletic Development 101: Baseball Flows™ Newsletter

When we look at the rising rate of injuries in baseball and softball, we have to ask: Are players getting injured because of how they are training to move?

Too often, we see baseball and softball players following training programs designed for other sports like football, Olympic lifting, bodybuilding, or track and field. These programs can be valuable in building strength and explosiveness but miss a critical piece: training for the specific movement demands of baseball and softball.

Then, players head to skill training—and many of the drills teach man-made, unnatural movement patterns that don't align with how the human body was designed to move. The result? Athletes who are strong but lack the ability to move fluidly and efficiently on the field. This mismatch between strength and movement is a recipe for poor performance and injury.

It’s Time to Rethink Player Development
The solution begins with addressing the foundation: global movement repatterning. This approach redistributes the athlete's focus from rigid, isolated drills to rediscovering their innate, natural movement patterns. Here’s how we do it at Baseball Flows:

  1. Rediscover Natural Movement

    • We prioritize training that helps athletes tap into their natural, global movement patterns—the kind of movements we’re all born with but often lose through repetitive and restrictive training.

  2. Train Skills Through Athleticism and Flow

    • Once those foundational patterns are reestablished, we build skills through athleticism and movement flow. This allows athletes to self-organize into their most optimal movement patterns, creating a more fluid and powerful way of playing the game.

Real Results on the Field
The benefits of this approach go far beyond injury prevention. Here are just a few examples of what we’ve seen with our athletes:

  • Increased Bat Speed: Reconnecting with natural rotational patterns improves bat speed and control at the plate.

  • Higher Pitch Velocity & Better Command: Pitchers learn to harness their bodies’ kinetic chains, creating more efficient energy transfer while staying healthy year-round.

  • Improved Movement: Defenders move quicker and more efficiently, reducing unnecessary steps and energy leaks.

Stay Healthy, Stay Performing
The ultimate goal of Baseball Flows is to keep players healthy and performing at their best. By focusing on athleticism, movement flow, and natural patterns, we’re building stronger, more resilient athletes who thrive on the field.
