Dr. Gallo Curveball: Baseball Flows Newsletter

Dear Flow Master,

Welcome back to another edition of Dr. Gallo's Curveball: Baseball Flows Newsletter. In this issue, we're diving deep into the captivating world of Movement IQ in baseball and softball and how it forms the cornerstone of a player's success on the diamond.

The Essence of Movement IQ

In baseball and softball, intelligence goes far beyond just the numbers on an IQ test. Your Movement IQ, or your innate understanding of movement, is the true game-changer. It's about how well you move on the field and how effectively you solve complex movement challenges with simple, efficient solutions. Your Movement IQ is the key to unlocking your full potential as a player.

The Elements of Movement IQ

  1. Situational Awareness: Know your surroundings like a hawk. Understand the game situation—whether you're in the field, at bat, or on the bases. This awareness is the foundation of your movement decisions.

  2. Efficient Decision-Making: Quick thinking under pressure is what separates the great from the good. It's about choosing the right move, based on strategy and the ever-changing dynamics of the game.

  3. Adaptability: A flexible approach is crucial. High Movement IQ players adjust on the fly, shifting techniques when needed to meet the demands of the moment.

  4. Effective Fundamentals: Proficiency in the basics is non-negotiable. Whether you're throwing, catching, hitting, or running the bases, solid fundamentals are your starting point. High Movement IQ players possess robust foundational global neurodevelopmental movement patterns.

  5. Spatial Awareness: High-movement IQ players have an innate sense of space. They judge distances and angles instinctively, positioning themselves perfectly to deliver optimal movement solutions.

  6. Game Strategy: Beyond the basics, Movement IQ encompasses game-wide tactics. Knowing when to bunt, when to steal, and how to exploit your opponent's weaknesses—it's all part of the strategy.

  7. Team Communication: Movement IQ players are masters of teamwork. They anticipate their teammates' actions, coordinate plays effectively, and become the glue that holds the team together.

  8. Learning and Growth: Movement IQ is a journey, not a destination. Players with a growth mindset actively seek to enhance their Movement IQ, learning from every movement they perform in the game and practice.

The Role of Movement Training

At the core of Movement IQ is a robust movement system. It's about having a deep well of global developmental movement patterns that you can call upon effortlessly during play. These patterns are deeply ingrained in your nervous system and honed through deliberate movement practice. They are simple, efficient movements that allow you to solve even the most complex problems on the field.

Picture a skilled infielder diving to make a stunning catch, a pitcher unleashing a perfect curveball, or a batter reading the pitch and connecting with the sweet spot of the bat. These moments of brilliance are the result of a well-honed Movement IQ. They're the culmination of countless hours spent perfecting the basics and internalizing those fundamental movement patterns.

Simplify the Complex

In baseball, as in life, the ability to simplify complex challenges is invaluable. Movement IQ allows you to do just that. With a strong foundation in global developmental patterns, you can streamline your movements, making them more efficient and effective. You read the game quicker, react faster, and execute with precision.

Embrace the Journey

Remember, your Movement IQ is not a fixed trait. It's something that can be developed and refined over time. Embrace the journey of growth and self-improvement. Seek out opportunities to enhance your movement training and expand your repertoire of global developmental patterns.

Screen Time and Movement IQ

In today's digital age, the impact of increased screen time on players' Movement IQ is undeniable. With less time devoted to movement exploration, the United States is witnessing a decline in movement literacy. Excessive screen time affects players' attention, ability to learn, and memory, all of which are crucial for sports.

Attention—the ability to focus—is essential during instructions from a coach and structured drills and games. It's also vital for independent skill practice. Lack of focus eventually leads to a decline in skills and performance.

The ability to learn is a key component of improving skill and mental aptitude for sports. Inhibiting learning inhibits athletic development.

Remembering what you've learned is essential for quick, independent decision-making in fast-paced sports. Athletes who lack the ability to think for themselves fall behind those with good decision-making skills.

Moreover, excessive screen time has been associated with lower levels of well-being and higher diagnoses of anxiety and depression. To ensure improved mental, physical, and emotional health in both sports and life, limit screen time to no more than 1 hour per day.

A study published in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery finds that playing video games is associated with shoulder and elbow pain in young elite male baseball players.

Using a keyboard, touch screen, mouse, or video game controller requires repetitive movement from fingers, hands, and wrists, and creates constant tension on forearms and shoulders. Tense muscles pull on connective tissue, increasing the odds of elbow and shoulder pain—especially for athletes in overhead sports like baseball, softball, volleyball, tennis, and basketball.

A Story from the Field

In a recent Physical Therapy case, I had a patient suffering from elbow pain. What I discovered was that how he held his phone was causing increased pressure on his ulnar nerve, resulting in increased nerve tension and elbow pain. This underscores the subtle yet profound ways screen time can impact not only our general health but also our athletic performance.
