Summer Training Tip: "The pelvis and deep core escort the arm!"

Athletic Development 101: Baseball Flows™ Newsletter

Welcome to the latest edition of our Baseball Flows Newsletter. In this issue, we delve into a crucial aspect of athletic development: the role of the pelvis and deep core in enhancing the performance and safety of hitters and pitchers.

Unlocking Athletic Potential: The Pelvis and Deep Core Connection

In physical therapy evaluations, we frequently observe that hitters and pitchers struggle with coordination, awareness, and activation in their hips and deep core. These areas are often overlooked in traditional training regimes, yet they are fundamental to powerful and efficient movement patterns in baseball.

The Hidden Power of the Pelvis and Deep Core

Coordination and Awareness:

  • The pelvis and deep core serve as the body's central stabilizers, orchestrating the movement of the limbs. This means a stable base to generate force and control the pitching motion for pitchers. It translates to balanced, adjustable, and powerful swings for hitters.

Activation and Strength:

  • Proper activation of the deep core muscles—such as the transverse abdominis, multifidus, and pelvic floor—ensures stability, strength, and movement flow. This foundation allows the arm to move freely, athletically, and efficiently, reducing the risk of injury.

  • Activation equals strength, enabling high-level proximal-to-distal sequencing that ensures elite force production and efficient transfer from the core to the arms. According to Stuart McGill, this creates "proximal stiffness that unleashes distal athleticism."

Training to Address Weaknesses Effectively

To address the common deficiencies we find in our evaluations, it’s essential to incorporate targeted training methods that enhance pelvic and core coordination, awareness, and activation. Here are some practical steps:

1. Dynamic Warm-ups: Incorporate Baseball Flows to your warm-ups this ensures that your hips and deep core are transitioned from rest to a competitive state. engage the hips and core. Baseball Flows prepare the body for more intense activity by activating the necessary muscle groups.

2. Integrated Movement Drills: Use drills that require coordination between the upper and lower body. Baseball Flows Medicine ball throws, rotational exercises, and resistance J-band work can enhance the connection between the pelvis, core, and arms.

3. Core Stability Exercises: Focus on core stability exercises such as our isometric planks. These exercises build a strong, stable base that supports all athletic movements.

4. Hip Mobility and Strength: Ensure hip mobility and strength with exercises like our Baseball Flows ground-based exercises. These improve the range of motion and strength in the hips, facilitating better coordination with the core.

5. Global Movement Patterns: The body does not function in isolation. Practice global movement patterns that mimic baseball activities. For pitchers, this might include our Flows to throw (Athletic throws program), which focuses on core stability, seamless transitions, and progressive loading. For hitters, it can involve our “Tidal tank flows” which emphasize core, hip engagement, and global movement patterning.

Why It Matters

Integrating these Baseball Flows into your training regimen can transform your performance on the field. When the pelvis and deep core effectively escort the arm, you can achieve more powerful throws and swings with greater precision and less risk of injury. This holistic approach to training not only enhances performance but also promotes long-term athletic health.

At Baseball Flows™, we are committed to providing cutting-edge training techniques that address these often-overlooked areas. By focusing on the pelvis and deep core, we help athletes develop the full-body coordination and strength necessary for peak performance.
