Athletic Development 101: Baseball Flows™ Newsletter

This week, we received a message from a coach after he watched the 7-minute conversation with Nate Trosky.
And it perfectly captured why Baseball Flows exists.
“It’s really cool to see minds coming together for the same cause. I see a lot of coaches practice footwork and drills—but they don’t teach kids how to transition it into the game. Then when some kids make those plays, people say ‘they’re just gifted.’ But in reality, we can train those things now… through movement.”
That’s the gap.
And it’s one many well-meaning coaches and parents don’t even realize exists.
The Most Overlooked Problem in Player Development
Most training environments do a good job teaching positions:
Footwork drills
Cone work
Reps in isolation
But games don’t ask players to repeat drills.
Games demand transitions:
From load → explode
From field → throw
From balance → chaos
From perception → action
When those transitions aren’t trained, players look great in practice…
and stiff, rushed, or robotic in games.
That’s when people say:
“He’s just different.”
“She’s gifted.”
“They’ve either got it or they don’t.”
But that explanation lets the system off the hook.
You Can’t Teach Talent… But You Can Teach Movement
One line from the conversation stood out:
“You can’t teach talent, but you can teach movement.”
And that’s the truth.
The players we often label as “naturals” aren’t magically better—
they’re better movers.
They have:
Better proprioception (awareness of where their body is in space)
Better sequencing
Better control under speed and pressure
When movement improves, skills seem to “show up on their own.”
We’ve seen it at every level:
9–10U players who were written off
High school athletes labeled “not athletic enough”
Players who didn’t fit the mold… until movement clicked
Not because they suddenly became more talented—
but because their movement system finally supported the skill.
A Hard Truth (and an Honest One)
One coach in the conversation said something powerful:
“My biggest drive is helping the kids coaches say ‘don’t got it’ about.”
Sometimes, when coaches run out of tools, they run out of belief.
Not because they don’t care—
but because they’re teaching what they were taught.
As another line reminded us:
“You only know what you know.”
That’s why growth in coaching requires humility.
And why one of our core beliefs is this:
Unlearning is part of learning.
Why Baseball Flows Exists
Baseball Flows isn’t here to replace coaches.
It’s here to bridge the gap.
We help players:
Learn how to move, not just where to stand
Transition athleticism into real game speed
Build awareness, control, and confidence
Stop relying on “giftedness” and start developing it
Because when movement improves:
Confidence rises
Injuries drop
Performance becomes repeatable
And players stop being labeled by what they “don’t have.”
A Final Thought
When coaches, parents, and educators come together with curiosity—
not ego—players win.
That conversation with Nate wasn’t about being right.
It was about being open.
And that mindset is the future of player development.
