Why “Perfect Mechanics” Disappear in Games

Athletic Development 101: Baseball Flows™ Newsletter

If perfect mechanics were enough, they wouldn’t disappear when the game speeds up.

Yet this is one of the most common frustrations we hear from parents and coaches:
A player looks great in lessons, but tight, rushed, and inconsistent in games.

It’s confusing. And discouraging.

The truth is, most players don’t struggle because they lack instruction or effort. They struggle because mechanics are being layered on top of a movement system that can’t support them at game speed.

Mechanics are simply the expression of movement.
Movement capacity is the foundation underneath it all.

When a player can’t stabilize, rotate, transition, or control their body under pressure, their mechanics won’t survive the chaos of competition. No matter how many reps they’ve done.

This is also why cues stop working in games.

Under stress, the brain doesn’t access instructions. It defaults to what the body is capable of in that moment. If the movement system lacks options, the body compensates — and patterns break down.

That’s when you see:

  • Early opening

  • Arm drag

  • Loss of command

  • Inconsistent contact

  • “Tight” swings

These aren’t mechanical problems.
They’re movement problems.

Great movers don’t think mechanics.
They flow. They adapt. They self-organize into efficient solutions.

That’s what coaches call “smooth.”

This is the gap in most training today.

We drill positions… but ignore transitions.
We chase reps… but skip athletic foundations.

That’s why we built Baseball Flows.

To give players the movement capacity mechanics depend on:

  • Balance

  • Coordination

  • Sequencing

  • Rhythm

  • Flow

All trained in simple 15–20 minute sessions that fit real family schedules.

PS: If your player looks great in practice but struggles when the game speeds up, it’s not a lack of effort or talent. It’s a movement foundation issue — and it’s trainable.
