Why Training Transitions (Not Positions) Is the Missing Link in Player Development

Athletic Development 101: Baseball Flows™ Newsletter

Parents and Coaches,

We talk a lot in baseball about “positions.”

• The right hitting position
• The perfect throwing position
• The ideal fielding position

But here’s something I’ve learned both on the field and in the physical therapy clinic:

👉 Baseball isn’t played in positions.
It’s played in transitions.

When a player comes into my clinic with back pain, hip pain, or shoulder issues, the pattern is almost always the same:

They were taught to hold a position
but never taught how to move into and out of it.

That gap — the transition — is where injuries happen and performance drops.

Think About Every Play Your Child Makes

A swing isn’t a position.
It’s a transition from load → stride → turn → finish.

A throw isn’t a position.
It’s rhythm → direction → rotation → release → deceleration.

Fielding a ground ball isn’t a position.
It’s approach → hinge → gather → transfer → throw.

Every skill in baseball is an expression of continuous motion.
The best athletes flow through these moments seamlessly.

The Problem?

Most youth training focuses on:

❌ Perfect static mechanics
❌ Holding angles
❌ Freezing in “perfect form”
❌ Choppy, disconnected drills

This teaches kids to move like robots — not athletes.
It also creates stiff, isolated movement patterns that stress the spine (hello L4-5 injuries), hips, and shoulders.

The Solution: Train the Flow Between the Positions

This is why Baseball Flows was founded.

Your son doesn’t need more isolated mechanics drills —
he needs movement training that connects the entire body.

Our programs teach players how to move:

✔ From the ground up
✔ With rhythm and timing
✔ With stability → mobility → power
✔ Through full-body transitions
✔ Under the same unpredictability they’ll see on game day

This is what builds:

🔥 Athleticism
🔥 Clean, efficient movement
🔥 Injury-resistant bodies
🔥 Real-game performance that sticks

Try This Question at Your Next Practice

Instead of asking:

❌ “Did he hit the right position?”

Ask:

✅ “How smooth was the transition into the next movement?”

That shift alone will change how you see player development forever.
