Are Reverse Throws Helping or Hurting Pitchers?

Athletic Development 101: Baseball Flows™ Newsletter

Hey Baseball Flows Family,

Pitchers are always looking for ways to improve velocity, arm health, and durability—but not every drill is as effective as it seems. Let’s talk about reverse throws.

Reverse throws have become popular in pitcher development, but are they really helping? Or could they be reinforcing inefficient movement patterns that don’t translate to the mound?

Food for Thought on Reverse Throws

🔹 Different Muscle Contractions – Throwing requires eccentric deceleration, while reverse throws focus on concentric acceleration. These aren’t the same and may not carry over to actual pitching.

🔹 Shoulder Laxity Concerns – Many pitchers already have anterior laxity due to repeated glenohumeral translation. Are you reinforcing instability within an already loose joint?

🔹 Opportunity Cost – Are reverse throws the best use of training time? Could other drills provide better movement adaptations and a higher return?

🔹 Risk vs. Reward – If a drill isn’t translating to better control, efficiency, or velocity, is it worth the potential drawbacks?

🔹 Neuromuscular Patterning – Does training concentric acceleration with reverse throws interfere with the eccentric control needed for proper deceleration in actual throwing?

🔹 Energy Transfer & Kinetic Chain – Pitching isn’t just a shoulder action—it’s a full-body movement. Are reverse throws reinforcing efficient energy transfer, or are they creating compensations?

🔹 Scapular Mechanics – Proper throwing mechanics involve scapular control and thoracic rotation. Are reverse throws supporting natural movement or disrupting it?

🔹 Context Matters – If reverse throws are used, when and how? Are they intentionally programmed within a comprehensive throwing plan, or are they just being thrown in as a trend?

At Baseball Flows, we believe in training with intent—not just following trends. Movement should be purposeful, efficient, and designed to keep pitchers healthy while maximizing performance.
