Practice Dirty So They Can Play Clean

Athletic Development 101: Baseball Flows™ Newsletter

Parents and coaches,

One of the biggest shifts happening in baseball right now?

More MLB organizations — including the Cubs — are embracing this idea:

“Practice dirty so you can play clean.”

Why?

Because baseball is chaotic.

⚾ Bad hops
⚾ Off-balance throws
⚾ Awkward body positions
⚾ Split-second reactions
⚾ Movement under pressure

The game is rarely perfect.

So if training only happens in perfectly controlled drills…

players often struggle when the game speeds up.

This is one of the biggest gaps in youth player development.

Many players are training for “routine” situations only.

But the best athletes can solve movement problems in real time.

That’s why at Baseball Flows we focus heavily on:

⚾ Athletic transitions
⚾ Adaptability
⚾ Coordination under speed
⚾ Rotational control
⚾ Problem solving through movement

Because here’s the truth:

Athleticism and Flow transfer to routine plays far more than routine drills transfer to athletic plays.

You may think:

“But my son will almost never need to make THAT type of play…”

Maybe.

But it’s always better to have athleticism and not need it…

than to need it and not have it.

When players move better:

⚾ Routine plays become easier
⚾ The game slows down
⚾ Confidence improves
⚾ Mechanics hold up under pressure

That’s why we believe:

Train the athlete — not just the drill.

Ask yourself this:

If the game sped up tomorrow…

would your player move freely or tighten up?

If that question matters to you, explore further.
