The Hidden Injury Pattern I Keep Seeing in Baseball Players (And How to Fix It)

Players walk into the clinic with:

  • L4–L5 stress reactions

  • Disc bulges

  • Tightness and nerve irritation

  • Low back pain that “came out of nowhere”

“I’ve been doing twisting drills.”
“My coach told me to rotate harder.”
“I’ve been doing exercises where my upper body twists independent of my lower body.”

In other words…

Players are being taught to twist — not to move.

Where This Goes Wrong

In baseball and softball, your body isn’t designed to twist like a wet towel being wrung out.

But that’s exactly what some drills are teaching:

  • Aqua bag twists

  • Over-rotating torso drills

  • Movements where the feet are stuck and the upper body spins

  • Training “core” in isolation instead of connection

These patterns create shearing forces through the spine, especially at the L4–L5 segment — one of the most vulnerable areas in young athletes.

Parents often ask me:

“Why is my son/daughter dealing with back pain at such a young age?”

And my answer is always the same:

“They’re rotating from the wrong place.”

The Best in the Game Don’t Twist — They Flow

Trea Turner. Gunnar Henderson. Bobby Witt Jr. Oneil Cruz.

They’re not muscling rotation through the spine.

They’re using ground-up, connected movement:

  • Coiling and uncoiling

  • Spiraling through the hips

  • Allowing the torso to follow the pelvis

  • Staying centered and balanced

  • Turning with the ground, not against it
