Train the Player, not body parts!

Dr. Gallo Curveball: Baseball Flows Newsletter

Dear Baseball Enthusiasts,

I hope this message finds you well. Today, I wanted to open up and share something deeply personal and close to my heart – the evolution of my approach to assessing and training players.

My journey began after my last pro-season in 2002 when I returned to school. Four years later, armed with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, I found myself eager to delve into the intricacies of movement. However, my initial educational experience left much to be desired in truly understanding the essence of assessing and training holistic movement patterns.

In 2007, I took a pivotal step by enrolling in a doctorate of physical therapy school. Despite courses on the nervous system, there was a distinct separation in how we applied our knowledge – neurological patients were approached differently from orthopedic patients, including athletes who fell into the latter category.

As the years unfolded in my practice as a Physical Therapist, I gradually came to a profound realization. I was inadvertently assessing and training parts instead of considering the player as a whole entity. This epiphany marked a turning point in my journey.

The human body is an intricate network of over 600 muscles and 300 joints. Training each individual part seemed impractical when the goal was to enable a player to skillfully hit or throw a low-and-away fastball. This realization underscored one of the major gaps in contemporary training methodologies – the tendency to focus on the orthopedic model, addressing isolated body parts rather than the player as a dynamic whole.

Having explored numerous training systems claiming to be functional, I observed a recurrent theme – a return to the orthopedic model, assessing and training individual body parts rather than the player.

The solution became clear: To play better, we must train better global patterns. This revelation sparked a renewed passion for training players with a holistic approach grounded in a nervous system-based methodology, founded on deep-rooted neurodevelopmental global movement patterns.

I am thrilled to share this newfound passion with you and invite you to join me on this transformative journey. Your support has been invaluable, and together, let's explore the boundless possibilities that holistic training can unlock for each player.

As a token of appreciation, I'm offering a sneak peek of my "Baseball Performance Summit" presentation. If you're eager to delve deeper into my holistic approach, click on the link above.
